I'm tired. I am really tired of receiving hundreds of spam emails daily. Probably i should say that i am tired of deleting them. What's funny is that most of the spam emails i receive are delivery failure reports.. for emails i never sent. Yes, this means that my email address is being used as 'from' address in those crappy emails.
What i really wonder is if the address leaked from some of the places where i registered to, like forums or communities, or if it is just because it's a simple address and probably easily generated by a random mailer. Who knows.. what I really think is that i'm not alone there, this is probably a common issue against which we don't have much that we can do. Change address? Yes, but then i should also change my address at any place i registered to. And what if, as i wondered above, the originating cause was exactly one of those webisites? Try to look up the IP address of the first SMTP transaction? Well, i can but it's time consuming and tires me more than actually deleting the emails and even if i do, there's not much i can do once i found that IP address: i surely can't sue or threaten 'it' to not do it anymore ;)
On a second thought.. that spam gives me a side benefit. My website gains visits: Probably a few of those who receive spam emails that use my address - because my guess is that if i receive 100-200 NDR's there's at least as many emails that do get to someone's inbox - take the domain name and put into their browser and end up here. To them i'd like to apologize, even if there's truly nothing i should apologize for as i am a victim too. In case you wonder, i double verified and my site does not allow smtp relay without authentication. And if you want to check you're free to do it as well ;) I also verified - and recently i also reinstalled my web server's OS - and there's no trojains/mailer bots on any of my systems.
I just received an email from someone who asked me to stop sending unsolicited emails... the her, or him, and to anyone else i ask them to check the IP address who originated the email: you will see it is not my IP address. Probably few know that you can send an email from any mail server using any fake address you wish: it's enough that the mail server allows for relay without matching the sender's address to a valid address for that server. The only thing that is real is the IP address: that's what the SMTP servers use to comunicate between them and it's logged and recorded within the mail itself. Maybe we should start working on a different mail system ;) Simone ps: If you want, share your comments ;)
